Description

Alleghany County on the west side of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia is one of the older counties in this area. This 1840 census lists only the names of the head of the households and the ages of males and females in various age ranges. We have added to this small amount of information, the second page that lists the other information, i.e occupations, pensioners from the American Revolution and War of 1812, then the personal data like insane, blind, deaf and whether they are under private care or public charge. In addition, a listing of those who teach schools with the number of scholars and whether they are at public charge or private charge. We have also given the number of freed colored in each household. More information is given here than is usually show on an 1840 transcription.
