Description

George Michael Weiss organized a Reformed congregation in Germantown ca. 1727 and by 1739 a church had been built. At the end of 1746, Michael Schlatter became pastor of the Philadelphia and Germantown congregations. He served the Germantown congregation until 1750. He was followed by John Conrad Steiner (1750-1756); John William Stoy (1756-1758), who served in Germantown and Philadelphia; John George Alsentz (1758-1767); John Christopher Faber (1767-1768); Christian Friederich Faehring (1769-1772); J. C. Albert Helffenstein (1772-1776) of Mosbach in the Palatinate, Casper Wack (supply in 1776); Samuel Dubendorff (1777-1779); J. C. Albert Helffenstein (1779-1790); and L. Frederick Herman (1790-1801). Baptism entries (1753-1809) include the name of the child, parents and sponsors, with dates of birth, baptism and death (as available). Marriage entries (1753-1798) include the name of the groom, the name of the bride, and date of marriage. Some marriage entries also provide the town/city of residence. Burial records (1758-1799) include the name of the deceased, age at time of death, and date of burial. Some burial entries provide the cause of death and/or name(s) of parent(s) or spouse. A list of catechumens (1758-1792) containing names and ages, a section devoted to those who received Holy Communion (1792-1802), and a full name index add to the value of this work.
