The Federal Census of 1860 is most interesting as this gives the names of residents prior to the influx of new settlers following the Civil War. Jackson County was established in 1835 from lands taken from Matagorda and Victoria Counties. In this transcription of the 1860 Census, we find that the dwelling and family numbers are the same, so only one number is given. This is a guide to the original records, if the researcher desires to go back into the original microfilm records to verify the names, ages, etc. Following the names of those living in each household is given their age, sex, occupation and where they were born. In this county, they were more exact on this latter entry and instead of saying Germany, it would be recorded Varia, Germany or Washington, Pennsylvania, etc.
