Description

Berkeley (or as it is sometimes spelled "Berkley") County, West Virginia is located in the panhandle of West Virginia between Virginia and Maryland. It is the second oldest county in the state and was created by an act of the House of Burgesses in February 1772 from the northern third of Frederick County, Virginia. Two thoughts on the origin of the name: 1) is from Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt, a Colonial Governor of Virginia from 1768-1770; 2) From Sir William Berkeley, another governor of Virginia in 1660-1677. These tax records show first the name of the person, then the number of polls in the household [males over 21 years] and the number of slaves within the household.
