Description

About half of this volume illustrates Yonkers development via demographics, politics and government, and economy. The rest transcribes the earliest existing town record book as well as separate miscellaneous documents. The record book transcriptions consist of accounts of credits and debits to the town's treasury from 1820 to 1829, and the minutes of meetings, lists of officials, and decisions made at the town meetings from 1820 to 1852. Various other documents deal with such subjects as: strays, road warrants, commissioners' reports, lists of jurors and school district reports. One section presents micro-biographies of town residents (the famous and the unknowns), containing such information as occupation, family relationships, positions held, census records, and references to other sources. Chapters include: Demographics: The Evidence of Change; Government, Politics and Economic Change During the Formative Years; Yonkers Infrastructure and Other Growth Factors; The Real Pillars of Yonkers; Township Accounting, 1820-1829; Early Yonkers Records; Yonkers, 1820-1830; Yonkers, 1831-1840; Yonkers, 1841-1852; Strays in Yonkers, 1820-1853; and, Epilogue. A list of associated documents precedes the chapters. Photographs, a bibliography and a surname index complete this work.
