Vincennes is the oldest town in the State of Indiana, and one of the oldest towns in "The Territory Northwest of the River Ohio," from which the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin were formed.

Information in this book was obtained from the writings of Bishop Brute, the first Catholic Bishop of Vincennes, the files of the Western Sun newspaper (1807-1845), and the records of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral (April 1749 to 1901). The topography, landmarks, agriculture, business, commerce, education, newspapers, public services, religion, antiques and distinguished citizens, including Gen. George Rogers Clark, Gen. Hyacinthe Lasselle, Zachary Taylor, and others are discussed. A partial list of prominent citizens, including lawyers, physicians, justices of the peace, real estate agents, ministers, landlords, and businessmen, subsequent to 1800, and a list of heads of families who settled at Post Vincennes on or before August 1, 1783, are included.
