Description

The 1860 census was the Eighth Decennial Census of the United States and provided a snapshot of the nation's population on the eve of the Civil War. It was the last census to list Southern wealth in terms of enslaved people, at that time considered personal property under the law.

Federal census takers recorded information about all those who were in each household on the official enumeration day, 1 June 1860. These enumerators visited households and recorded names of every person, along with their age, sex, color, profession, occupation, value of real estate, value of personal estate, place of birth, parental foreign birth, marriage, literacy, and whether deaf, dumb, blind, insane or "idiotic".
