Attala County, Mississippi was established in 1834 from territory ceded by the Choctaw Indians in 1830. The county lines are the same today as originally laid out. The author has attempted to collect sources of information on the early pioneers of Attala county during the period 1834 through 1865. Due to a courthouse fire on July 29, 1858, most of the early county records were destroyed, making it difficult for today's researchers. Included in this volume are the tax lists for 1835, 1838, 1843, 1847; newspaper notices from on microfilm at the Mississippi State Archives in Jackson, Mississippi, listing marriages, deaths, divorces, court cases, business transactions, public auctions, sheriff's sales, crime reports, electoral nominations, new business announcements, advertisements, delinquent taxpayers, and letters being held at the post office.

Also included are probate and deed records from 1835-1859 available in the Attala County Courthouse in Kosciusko; an 1850 Slave Schedule taken from the United States census records; a descriptive register giving physical attributes and other information on men living in Attala County during 1864 and 1865; and genealogies of families living in Attala County in 1860 or earlier compiled from census records, county records, cemetery records, state military records, and death certificates.
